Objective:

Assistant Professor of Cooperative Extension in Dairy Cattle Production, Health, & Management Economics
The University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, a statewide program with local delivery, in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis, is seeking a full time Assistant Professor of Cooperative Extension (100%) in the area of discovery, development, and application of management and economic knowledge and tools needed for farm-level decision support and improvement of health and productivity of dairy cattle herds for sustainable dairy cattle production systems in California. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with colleagues in the school, across the University, and within the network of UC Cooperative Extension who work on the health and productivity of dairy cattle and calves, food safety, and adoption of sustainable dairy production practices. The position is located in Tulare, California at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Extension: Responsibilities include: 1) promote economics of dairy herd health and production within the network of University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Advisors and Cooperative Extension (CE) Professors; 2) develop and extend science-based information via a variety of media types (eg, workshops; print, electronic, and social media platforms) on economics of dairy production, animal health, and well-being for dairy cattle production systems in California; and 3) interact with dairy producers, food animal veterinarians in California, allied professionals and agricultural organizations, regulatory agencies, and academic clientele such as UCCE Advisors and Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) faculty.
Research: The development of a creative and productive research program performed independently and collaboratively within the UCCE network (advisors, CE faculty, AES faculty, etc.) and the California dairy industry with funding from extramural sources is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position, including publication of results in peer-reviewed professional and scientific journals and appropriate UCCE outlets. The successful candidate will develop an applied research program linking the economics of dairy herd health, production, and veterinary medicine to productivity, health, welfare, and environmental outcomes. Areas of emphasis could include infectious disease control, antimicrobial stewardship, microbial and pre-harvest food safety, nutrition and production efficiency, internal medicine, reproduction, dairy automation systems, calf management, environmental quality, animal welfare, or beneficial management practices consistent with sustainable dairying including reduced carbon footprint, water conservation, and economic efficiency. The areas of emphasis will be based on an evaluation of the needs of the California dairy industry, with opportunity to expand and redirect efforts as new issues and industry needs emerge across California.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required. Participation in relevant graduate academic programs and providing leadership in directing research projects of professional and graduate students is considered as university service.

QUALIFICATIONS:
An advanced degree (PhD) related to animal health management and / or economics is required; a DVM or equivalent degree is preferred. The successful candidate is required to have demonstrated expertise or appropriate training in dairy cattle production, herd health management, and applied economics. Demonstrated ability or potential to develop economic tools and strategies that support dairy farmers' decision-making and promote the economic sustainability and welfare of the dairy enterprise is preferred. Documented evidence of research activity or ability in one or more aspects of dairy herd health economics (e.g., infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, food safety, automated milking and feeding systems, calf management, nutrition, internal medicine, reproduction, animal welfare, environmental quality, or beneficial management practices consistent with sustainable dairying) is required. A record of acquisition of extramural funding or the potential to do so is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are required. Evidence of or potential for leadership and initiative is required. Evidence of or potential for extending applied research and conducting outreach education for the dairy industry is required. |
