Job Description:

Objective:
Mixed large animal ambulatory practice based in Davis California, covers territory one hour in all directions. The cattle portion of practice is predominantly dairy work consisting of rectal palpation for pregnancy diagnosis, calfhood vaccinations, sick cow work, hernia and DA surgeries, and other obstetrical work. Dairy herds are a mix of AI bred and bull bred, so proficiency at palpating to 32 days pregnant, as well as aging pregnancies from 32-120 days is necessary. We currently provide milk quality services to our clients. There is a small component of beef work consisting of pregnancy examination, Bangs vaccination, and writing health certificates; this work tends to be seasonal. The equine portion of the practice is built on reproductive services through managing mares for breeding and foaling. The equine work also includes lameness evaluations including joint injections, medicine cases, and prepurchase examinations. In addition, there are a few small ruminant clients, as well as the some backyard pigs, chickens, and dogs. Almost all of the dog work is for already established large animal clients and usually consists of vaccinations and euthanasia. Emergency work is limited, as the dairy clients are well trained and have few problems; most of the cattle emergencies are uterine prolapses or calving's. Equine emergencies can be referred to the teaching hospital, and are more common during breeding season. Mix of animals is about 40% dairy, 50% equine, with remaining 10% spread across beef, small ruminants, and swine.
