Job Description:

Objective:
The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) branch is leading the way to preserve the efficacy of antimicrobial drugs, and you will help us develop the nation’s first comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship and surveillance program. We are a statewide program intended to promote actions that will slow the development of resistant bacteria associated with livestock and poultry that have negative public and animal health impacts. We gather data and develop studies related to medically important antimicrobial sales and usage, livestock management practices, and trends in antibiotic resistance associated with farm animals and animal products. Additionally, we work with subject matter experts to develop antimicrobial stewardship tools and best animal management practices that mitigate the development of antimicrobial resistance while maintaining health and welfare outcomes. You will assist with the development of antimicrobial stewardship guidelines and best management practices for California livestock, conduct in-person and/or virtual presentations to livestock producers and licensed veterinarians, and serve as a key member of the stewardship unit within AUS. Responsibilities will include: • Assist with developing, implementing, evaluating, and advising on outreach, education, and communication efforts, including in-person and/or virtual talks and social media messaging. • Plan, organize, and coordinate stewardship-related events for California livestock producers and provide technical assistance to local veterinarians. • Work with the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) Laboratory, industry stakeholders, and other Federal and State agencies to develop stewardship resource materials. • Assist branch staff with the preparation of reports, newsletters, presentations, agency correspondence, and management updates. • Research scientific literature and identify knowledge gaps and/or opportunities for further programmatic study; review professional journals to expand and maintain knowledge and expertise; and serve as a State resource for programmatic issues.
