Objective:
 The Department of Large Animal Clinical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania - New Bolton Center, is seeking a qualified individual to fill a two-year food animal production medicine residency available by July 1, 2024.The objective of this residency position in Food Animal Field Service is to provide knowledge and clinical proficiency in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of food animal patients, with a focus on medicine, field surgery, reproduction, preventative medicine, and herd health. The residency program is in accordance with the requirements of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) - Dairy or Food Animal. The resident is expected to establish and maintain contact with the ABVP and to fulfill the guidelines outlined by the ABVP for residency programs including, but not limited to, case logs, publication in a refereed journal, and a case report for the ABVP. A certificate of completion of the two-year residency program will be issued upon fulfillment of the program requirements and approval of the residency committee. 
Training Required:
 Requirements for the position include a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree, a minimum of one year of postgraduate experience acceptable to the residency committee, and eligibility for licensure in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware - Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program or eligibility for accreditation by the USDA - Valid driver’s license

Salary:
 The salary for the resident position is $40,000 for the first year.  
Benefits:
 Medical benefits and professional liability coverage are provided by the University. Two weeks of paid vacation per year - a stipend towards continuing education to attend one educational meeting each year - a clothing allowance for coveralls, boots, etc.

Facilities provided by the veterinary practice:
 UPENN - Field Service provides all the equipment necessary to practice including a fully stocked ambulatory truck and ultrasound unit. Our Field Service unit is separate from our teaching hospital, but there is access to the New Bolton Center Teaching Hospital for referral of cases and for acquiring advanced clinical training, if desired.  
Other Personnel :  We have 2 full time faculty members in Field Service. There are currently one resident matriculating in an ABVP Food Animal residency. Our department has multiple faculty members in all areas of production animal medicine including specialist in the Teaching Hospital and in the Center for Animal Health and Productivity. The resident has the option to spend rotations outside of Field Service or in additional off-campus externships related to dairy, beef production, swine production, and small ruminant production. Consultation with other specialists from the New Bolton Center Large Animal Hospital is readily available and welcomed and although the focus of this position is on clinical service and teaching, the successful candidate will have the opportunity and is encouraged to participate in collaborative clinical research in areas of interest.  
Practice strengths and emphasis of the business:
 The Food Animal Field Service team works primarily with dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and goats with a small number of camelid and swine patients. The resident will assist or be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients while on the clinical service. Daily practice obligations will include cases typical of ambulatory practice including but not limited to: routine bovine herd checks (trans-rectal palpation for pregnancy and sick cow work), field surgery, herd and individual animal health, internal medicine, and preventative medicine. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to participate in the academic program of the section, including didactic and laboratory teaching of students and training of interns with a special emphasis on clinical teaching of veterinary students on the Field Service rotation. The resident will rotate with Food Animal Field Service clinicians in the emergency schedule and will assist in teaching veterinary students and attend and participate in scheduled rounds.  
Practice Area:  New Bolton Center is the large-animal campus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and is located 40 miles southwest of the Philadelphia main campus, in beautiful and picturesque Chester County. Our practice serves a diverse population of large and small dairies, small cow/calf beef operations, as well as pet and commercial small ruminant, camelid, and swine operations.
