Objective:
|
The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine (UA-CVM), located in Oro Valley, Arizona, invites applications for a faculty position with a primary focus on teaching food animal medicine, surgery, and herd health management as part of Clinical Skills courses to join the current food animal team. We are seeking a veterinarian with clinical experience with food animal species and herd health management to assist with clinical skills labs for first and second-year pre-clinical veterinary students as well as provide some infrequent coverage for our Large Animal Practice clinical rotation for third year veterinary students.
Our curriculum is organized by organ-system blocks, and this position will focus on supporting the food animal clinical skills teaching which occurs in the first four semesters of our veterinary curriculum. This position will collaborate extensively with nine other clinical skills faculty members including three others focused on food animal medicine. The UA-CVM veterinary medical curriculum is built on an evidence-based pedagogy with the goal of graduating “day-one-ready” veterinarians trained in lifelong learning and prepared to excel in a wide range of career trajectories. Our faculty have a unique advantage of being part of a team consisting of pedagogy and technology experts to deliver content in innovative methodologies. Team Based Learning (TBL) and Peer Instruction (PI) methods will be used in classroom sessions—traditional didactic lectures are not part of the teaching program.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to joining and contributing to an academic culture of active learning. Abundant faculty development resources are available, both within the college and externally, to assist faculty in developing skills in active learning strategies. Opportunities to engage in scholarly activities related to veterinary medicine are encouraged, but not required with this position. |

Training Required:
|
DVM/VMD degree (or international equivalent).
At least two years of clinical experience in food animal practice.
Valid drivers license. |

Experience Desired:
|
At least four years of clinical experience with a variety of food animal species and herd health.
Clinical experience with cattle (beef & dairy), small ruminant, and/or avian medicine.
Prior experience in teaching and learning using active learning techniques to a wide range of students.
Board certification or board eligible in a relevant specialty such as American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).
American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM), American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). |

Duties & Responsibilities:
Participate as a team member in the support and delivery of food animal and herd health pre-clinical veterinary medical doctorate curriculum in clinical skills courses (VETM 803A, 803B, 803C, and 803D) involving the refinement and development of hands-on activities for laboratory sessions, along with lecture and prework materials to help prepare students for the lab.
Help support other non-food animal clinical skills labs when needed.
Deliver curriculum content to veterinary students within the CVM vision, evidence-based, active learning which includes using Team-Based Learning and Peer Instruction pedagogy, in which students take substantial ownership of their learning, and student classroom time is focused on the collaborative application of content (as opposed to a focus on delivery of content).
Participate in the development of elective courses for students with an interest in food animal species and assist in identifying and coordinating supporting expertise for the food animal electives.
Provide reasonable out-of-classroom availability to cohorts of veterinary students for office hours and scheduled meetings to assist students with learning.
Engage in ongoing assessment and professional development aimed at the lifelong process of improving teaching and learning skills.
Contribute to the clinical year training by leveraging experience with food animal species to support the implementation of the required Large Animal Ambulatory clinical rotation with no on-call or after-hours duties.
Engage in the CVM collegial community, the university community, and the larger global academic community through participation in shared governance, advisory committees, and academic/professional society meetings.
