Description: This first edition autographed copy (259 pages) is the authorized biography of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug and His Battle to End World Hunger. The Foreword is by President Jimmy Carter. Dr. Hesser had his beginning on a farm in Indiana and earned the BS, MS and PhD at Purdue University in agricultural economics in the 1960s. He became the Foreign Service Officer in charge of U.S. efforts to increase food production. He collaborated with the Pakistan's extension service to train farmers in the proper techniques for cultivating Dr. Borlaug's high-yielding varieties of wheat. He met Dr. Borlaug in Pakistan in 1966 and they collaborated for about five years. During this time Pakistan doubled its wheat production and became self-sufficient in cereal grains by 1974. Dr. Borlaug was known for the "Green Revolution" that prevented wide spread starvation in India and other countries last century. Dr. Borlaug is the only agriculturist to earn the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1986 he established the World Food Prize, a $250,000 award yearly. He received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007. The donor has met Dr. Hesser (90 years old) and Dr. Borlaug (died at 95 years old in 2009). Newspaper clippings will be included in this hard bound volume. This is a collector's copy.
