Job Description:
 

Objective:
 Three-year Residency in Dairy Production Medicine (DPM) that prepares the veterinarian for a career in advanced dairy practice, dairy consulting practice, food animal academic positions, or industry, depending on the needs and interests of the resident. Our program is a part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and is located in Tulare, California, which is centered in the largest dairy cattle production area in the U.S. The 2nd year of the program is devoted to completion of required coursework for the Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) degree. (While taking academic coursework, the resident is not assigned to clinical duties or rotations.) The DPM residency has these program goals: 1. Acquire expanded training in dairy production medicine & herd health for careers in advanced dairy practice, dairy consulting practice, food animal academic positions, or industry, depending on the needs of the resident. 2. Gain clinical teaching experience. 3. Develop knowledge & skills for designing & implementing clinical research projects. 4. Receive graduate training & earn an advanced degree. 5. Become eligible for board certification in: ABVP—Dairy Practice and ACVPM (Veterinary Preventive Medicine). 
Training Required:
 Veterinarian with at least one year of clinical experience in either a private dairy or relevant food animal practice or internship program. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher from their veterinary degree program. Foreign nationals must be eligible for either a TN or J1 visa with no home country requirement for the term of the residency. Application Deadline is April 5, 2024. 
Experience Desired:
 Upon admission to the residency program, the resident veterinarian will need to obtain University veterinary licensure with the California Veterinary Medical Board. (A University License is limited to practice of veterinary medicine within the scope and requirements of the Dairy Production Medicine Program and does not extend to any other practice activities beyond those of the residency program.) 
Salary:
 First-year resident salary is $50,183/yr with annual increases for years two and three of the residency program.  
Benefits:
 The resident veterinarian receives medical, dental and vision insurance, as well as 24 d/yr of paid time off. Housing (4 bed/2 ba) is also provided at the VMTRC for the resident during the 1st and 3rd years for a reduced rental fee (~$600/mo, including utilities). (The 2nd year is devoted to coursework for the MPVM degree during the academic year at the UC Davis Campus.)

Facilities provided by the veterinary practice:
 Office and laboratory spaces will be provided at the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center (VMTRC) in addition to practice vehicles and equipment for the Dairy Production Medicine Program. 
Other Personnel :  Two full-time dairy production medicine clinicians, 3 dairy production medicine residents (including this position), and six faculty members: 2 veterinary epidemiologists, dairy cattle extension veterinarian, antimicrobial stewardship extension veterinarian, dairy production, health, and management extension economist, and PhD ruminant nutritionist. The VMTRC also operates the Milk Quality Laboratory that provides milk culture diagnostic services, including species typing for Mycoplasma species. Our residency program is co-located with the Tulare Branch Laboratory of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System which provides full mammalian and avian diagnostic services with expertise in cattle diagnostic pathology

Practice Area:  The Veterinary Medicine Teaching & Research Center (VMTRC) is located in the heart of California’s dairy industry. Tulare County is the leading milk production county in California, home to over 250 dairies with an average herd size of over 1,800 cows. Tulare County is also home to many feedlots for dairy beef production and heifer replacement rearing. The Dairy Production Medicine residency program is situated in this unique area and taps into these important resources. The VMTRC is located in California’s San Joaquin Valley, between Fresno and Bakersfield, 3 miles south of Tulare, just off of CA Highway 99. Only 40 miles west of the Sequoia National Park, 146 miles east of the Central Coast, 173 miles north of Los Angeles, and 240 miles south of Davis & San Francisco.
