Job Description:

Objective:
We are currently seeking another full-time “cow vet” to join our team. Our field work is seasonal in nature, however, there is a good balance between clinical duties (pregchecking by U/S, bull breeding soundness evaluations, feedlot necropsies, etc.) and office duties (consulting, data analysis, research, etc.). We focus largely on preventive medicine, consulting, and crew training and are proud to say our clients have limited after-hours individual animal emergencies. We truly have the best of all worlds; progressive clients, LOTS of cows, and quality of life.
Training Required:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM, VMD, or equivalent) from an accredited veterinary school. We currently have three American veterinarians in our practice and can easily assist international applicants with work permits, relocation, etc. Eligibility for licensure through the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
Experience Desired:
New graduates are welcome to apply! Cattle handling experience and a keen interest in beef production (cow-calf and feedlot) are required. We have lots of great mentorship opportunities based on your primary interests. For the seasoned practitioner or applicant with post-graduate training and/or board certification, there is ample opportunity to specialize in feedlot health and performance data analytics, cow-calf consulting, nutrition and/or field research. We are currently conducting research projects on antimicrobial resistance, genetic markers for BRD, bovine coronavirus, lameness in the feedlot, advancing feed analysis technology, vitamin and mineral supplementation, among others. We regularly collaborate with veterinarians and epidemiologists at the University of Calgary and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. There is also ample opportunity to teach for those interested in mentoring the next generation of cow vets!
Salary:
 Negotiable, based on experience.
Benefits:
Our practice offers a competitive salary with bonuses and profit-sharing structure, mentorship, cell phone, full health benefits, continuing education allowance and professional dues. Veterinarians are granted 3 weeks paid vacation, 1 week for continuing education, and 1-week sick leave. We share on-call and holiday duties, ensuring that everyone gets personal time off.

Practice strengths and emphasis of the business:
If you are drawn to cattle country and the true western lifestyle, Alberta, Canada is the place to be! Veterinary Agri-Health Services, Ltd. (VAHS) was founded in 1993 in southern Alberta and currently services progressive cow-calf and feedlot operations across all four western provinces. Though we are 100% beef cattle focused there are several areas to specialize in and lots of variety to our day. Our mission is to provide client-focused professional services and expertise in beef cattle health and welfare, production medicine, field research, and veterinary education. We have built our practice on excellent customer service, and as a result have very strong relationships with our clients. We consider many of them close friends and are frequently invited to their brandings, cattle drives, and bull sales. Our clients have excellent facilities, and all herd and individual animal work is performed on site at their ranches and feedlots. Our team is strongly encouraged to become active in industry roles (AABP, AVC, WCABP, ABVMA, ABVTA, etc.) and volunteer within the community (4-H, Ag societies, etc.) We strive for excellent communication and conduct brief “tailgate” meetings, vet team strategy meetings, and rounds on a bi-weekly basis, as well as monthly staff meetings with breakfast. We enjoy teaching and host student rotations through the University of Calgary Distributed Teaching Hospital. We also deliver an Advanced Beef Production Medicine rotation each July for ten 4th year veterinary students from all over North America. VAHS hosts numerous staff events each year including a summer party at the Ponoka Stampede, Christmas party, and river float. We also enter a team in the local ranch rodeo competition. Please check out our website (www.vahs.net) and our Facebook page (@VeterinaryAgriHealthServices) to learn more about us, our beautiful landscapes, and our practice culture.
Practice Area:  You name it, its nearby: international airport, downtown Calgary, the Rocky Mountains, the world-renowned Banff National park, fishing and big-game hunting, prairies, foothills, and badlands, and lots of rodeos and western events including the greatest outdoor show on earth, The Calgary Stampede!
