Job Description:

Objective:
The Tufts Veterinary Field Service at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an internship position in large animal ambulatory medicine. Tufts Veterinary Field Service is a nine-doctor practice located in Woodstock, CT and is a primary clinical and teaching unit of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, MA. Woodstock, CT is in the northeast “quiet corner” of Connecticut and provides a rustic New England setting while still having a convenient commute into the major cities of Hartford, Providence, and Boston. The bovine portion of the practice focuses on dairy production medicine and provides primary care for both beef and dairy cattle on farms owning 1 to 3000+ cattle. The practice’s equine services focus on preventative medicine, lameness, internal medicine, field surgery and reproduction. There is a sizable, and growing, case load in small ruminants and camelids to make the intern a well-rounded large animal ambulatory practitioner. The internship program will provide a new or recent graduate with mentorship and a diverse practice environment to become a proficient and confident large animal ambulatory clinician. Tufts Veterinary Field Service is well-equipped and has dedicated support staff. The intern will receive hands-on training and experience in bovine, small ruminant, and equine field surgeries, portable digital radiography & ultrasound, endoscopy (both 1 & 3 meter), power float, lameness locator and in-house blood chemistry analysis. Opportunities for advanced training in the use of transrectal ultrasound, record analysis using DairyComp305, advanced reproductive techniques in cattle and small ruminants and on-farm investigation of herd-wide issues may be provided for interested candidates. The intern will share on-call responsibilities after a dedicated training period, and a back-up clinician will be available throughout the internship. The intern will participate in clinical and laboratory training of veterinary students throughout the academic year. Attendance and presentation in weekly didactic rounds with the Tufts Veterinary Field Service is mandatory.
Training Required:
Requirements of the internship are DVM or equivalent degree and the ability to obtain Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island licensure. The candidate must obtain USDA Category II accreditation for the same states as soon as possible. Interns are expected to reside within 30 minutes of the clinic. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, adaptability in a quick changing environment, ability to readjust priorities as needed, practicality and these skills will be fortified through the training program.
Experience Desired:
Any experience level considered. This is a one-year position beginning July 10, 2023 and ending July 17, 2024. Applications are due October 21, 2022, and applicant video-conference interviews will be held the weeks of October 31 & November 7, with in-person interviews at the discretion of the selection committee. Prospective interns are encouraged to extern at the practice as their schedule allows. Final selection notifications will be sent no later than December 5, 2022. Applicants should email a letter of intent, current curriculum vitae, three letters of professional reference and official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to Wellesley Kosak, Department Administrator, Department of Ambulatory Medicine and Theriogenology, Wellesley.Kosak@tufts.edu. After initial application review, interviews will be part of the final decision-making process and preference will be given to those individuals who have a proven interest in large animal medicine.
