By commercial plane, you can be on the beach in Cancun in 5 hours. THE FARMS: New Mexico & West Texas is home to the largest dairy farms in the world. Farms range from 2000-30,000 milking cows with large calf/heifer ranches. Per cow production on these farms is the highest in the USA at 24,000+ lbs/cow. Dairy farms are mostly family owned and the level of management is high. These farms have predominantly migrated from California to utilize the High Plains regional advantages. These advantages include; relatively cheap land & water, mild high-desert climate, agriculture friendly communities, ease of permitting, access to workers, proximity to milk processing and feed. Cattle are mostly housed in Dry Lot corrals and fed Corn silage based total-mixed-rations.
