Objective:
 Appointment: 100% Texas A&M AgriLife Research, 12-month appointment, non-tenure track. 100% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research – Amarillo. Will also have an academic appointment with the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. Strongly encouraged to pursue adjunct faculty appointment with the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX. General Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for planning and conducting research in ruminant nutrition & production systems involving beef cattle feedlots and stocker cattle in the Texas High Plains region. Supervises research personnel, including graduate students, undergraduate students, and operations manager associated with an experimental cattle feedlot, a metabolism facility, and associated laboratories. A research farm is available for grazing studies. Oversees management and operation of a ruminant nutrition laboratory, metabolism laboratory, experimental cattle feedlot with Calan gate and group feeding pens, and experimental grazed pastures. Works as a member of a multi-agency/multi-disciplinary faculty team in conducting field research on ruminant animal nutrition, animal health, and environmental quality in relation to industry needs and state and federal policy. Conducts independent research in ruminant nutrition responsive to the need of the cattle feeding industry and stocker cattle operations; anticipates research needs not explicitly identified by industry. Participates as a team member in ruminant nutrition and health research and technology transfer/outreach with other faculty affiliated cooperating agencies and institutions in the Texas Panhandle, including Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, West Texas A&M University, USDA Agricultural Research Service, and the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. Contributes to statewide programs in development of integrated optimization models of nutrients, energy, and environmental management that can contribute to improved cattle productivity and environmental protection. This position will serve a critical need for the Department of Animal Science in its effort to achieve excellence in five Areas of Excellence, specifically in the area of Quantifiable Animal Performance. Administrative Relationships: Reports directly to the Center Director, Texas A&M AgriLife Research-Amarillo, with academic affiliation to the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, College Station. Directs the work of senior support staff, feedlot operations manager, and other technical personnel and graduate students assigned to the project. Headquarters: Texas A&M AgriLife Research-Amarillo, TX. Area Served: Primarily serves the Texas High Plains and partners with scientists in other universities, agencies, and neighboring states as appropriate.  
Training Required:
 Qualifications (preferred/required): Ph. D. in Animal Science or Ruminant Nutrition is required. B. S. and M. S. degrees in animal science curriculum or related fields are preferred. Required qualifications: Experience in area of specialization, including beef cattle feeding and management; ability to write grant proposals to secure external funding; evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals; and participation in professional societies. A valid driver’s license is also required. Preferred experience: five (5) years’ experience as faculty member in ruminant nutrition applied to feedlot or stocker cattle; experience managing a research cattle feedlot & feeding systems; experience in leading research in feedlot, field, or laboratory; demonstrated capability to perform independent research, supervise scientific support staff and graduate students, and publish results in refereed journals. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language and to cooperate as an interdisciplinary team member is required. Competence in the use of personal computers and appropriate statistical-analysis software is required. Knowledge and experience in beef cattle nutrition research applied to feedlot and stocker cattle production are preferred.

Facilities provided by the veterinary practice:
  Incumbent will be the research project leader responsible for the ruminant nutrition laboratory at Texas A&M AgriLife Research-Amarillo, a ruminant metabolism laboratory at Bushland, an experimental cattle feedlot at Texas A&M AgriLife Research/USDA-ARS Bushland (~400 head capacity), and the animal-husbandry facilities at the James Bush Farm. Collaboration is expected with faculty and scientists of the TAMU Animal Science Department, the WTAMU Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, and the USDA-ARS Conservation and Production Research Laboratory (Bushland, TX).
