AABP responds to the videotaping of scenes of animal abuse at a California slaughterhouse

The American Association of Bovine Practitioners represents 5,000 beef and dairy veterinarians from across the United States and Canada. The images seen in the videos from the California slaughter facility are deplorable. The AABP Principles of Animal Welfare clearly state that abuse of animals is not acceptable under any circumstances. Our profession strongly promotes proper care and handling practices for livestock, and abuses seen in this situation cannot be tolerated.

Gatz Riddell, Jr., DVM, to lead AABP

The American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) announces that M. Gatz Riddell, Jr., DVM, of Auburn University, Ala., will become Executive Vice President of the AABP. Riddell is preceded by Jim Jarrett, DVM, who passed away in January after a long battle with colon cancer.

Prior to this position, Riddell served as assistant professor, associate professor and professor in the Department of Large Animal Surgery and Medicine, Auburn University .....

January 28, 2005 – Rome, Georgia -- James A. Jarrett, DVM, executive vice president of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP), died January 22, at his home after a long courageous battle with colon cancer. Jarrett was 69 years old.

Beef Demand Climbs Five Percent In 2003
Growth Surpasses Goal of Industry's Long Range Plan

Consumer demand for beef continued a strong upward climb in 2003, with the Beef Demand Index increasing more than 5 percent compared to 2002 and more than 15.4 percent since reversing its 20-year decline in 1998, the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) announced during the recent Cattle Industry Annual Convention in Phoenix. The Beef Demand Index is a reflection of the combination of per capita consumption and consumer spending for beef.
