AABP Committees

General Committee Membership Information
 

If you are an AABP member and would be interested in serving on a committee you can indicate that interest by emailing AABP Headquarters or you may contact committee chairpersons directly by clicking on their name.

All committees are responsible to the Board of Directors. The Executive Vice-President shall coordinate the communication between the committees and the board as well as communication between committees. The chairperson of each committee shall be appointed by the President on the basis of recognized expertise in the area of committee interest. This Chairperson shall in turn appoint a committee with similar expertise and representing a broad range of geographical and bovine practice specialty backgrounds.

Committee members shall serve for three year terms and appointment to the committees should be staggered so that no more than 1/3 of the committee members will complete their terms each year. All committee appointments are subject to board approval. The committee chairperson will maintain that position for a 3 year term with elligibility for one reappointment at the discretion of the president with board approval. In addition the Chairperson will report to the board in person at the annual AABP convention and in writing before the spring board meeting.

A board member will serve on each committee and it is recommended that this person serve as vice-chairperson to facillitate communication between the committee and the board. The committee shall:

Study issues referred by the board.
Study issues raised by the chairperson or committee members.
Suggest and or assist with topics for the program at national and regional AABP meetings as well as the AVMA national meeting.

The AMSTUTZ SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE will make recommendations to the Executive Committee and/or Board of Directors in administering the Amstutz Scholarship Fund. Committees responsibilities are in two parts:
(1) Raise monies to increase the total funds through various activities approved by the Board.
(2) Set a policy for granting scholarship based upon dollar amounts and qualifications of the applicants with full compliance laws of state, province and federal governments applicable to granting scholarship.

This committee shall apprise the Board and the AABP membership with regard to all issues that pertain to animal welfare and to promote animal welfare in the bovine species. The committee shall report the latest information and suggested positions that AABP should take on subjects such as environmental concerns in bovine confinement housing and waste disposal. Other common animal welfare concerns such as dehorning, castrating, branding and bovine transportation shall be considered by this committee.

The BIOLOGICAL RISK MANAGEMENT AND PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE shall apprise the Board and membership on all biological disease risk and preparedness issues. The responsibility of this committee is to:
(1) Monitor and review those issues of interest and significance to the Board on all issues pertaining to biological disease risk and animal preparedness and response,
(2) Assure that liaison exists with appropriate Federal and/or State agencies, bureaus, and organizations that deal with issues pertaining to biological disease risk and animal preparedness and response,
(3) Provide an identifiable and responsible body with which other allied veterinary and professional organizations, and commodity and special interest groups can interact on issues relating to biological disease risk and animal preparedness and response,
(4) Formulate and provide recommendations to the Board on matters pertaining to biological disease risk and animal preparedness and response to which AABP action or reaction may be in the best interest of the Association and
(5) Submit timely and relevant information regarding biological disease risk and animal preparedness and response issues which could be made available to the membership via the website or newsletter.

The FOOD QUALITY, SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE shall apprise the Board and AABP membership on issues concerning the safety of bovine food products for human consumption, excluding pharmaceutical and biological product residue issues (drug and biological residue issues will be addressed by the Committee on Pharmaceutical and Biological Issues). The committee’s concerns include, but are not limited to:Proper administration of animal drugs to assure best food quality for end consumer.
1. Microorganisms and chemical residues in bovine food products which may be a risk to human or animal health.
2. The accidental or unintentional transmission of pathogens to food.
3. Improving animal trace back ability by encouraging an effective national animal identification program.
4. To provide up-to-date and applicable food security and quality information to members of the AABP.
The responsibility of this committee shall be to:
1. Monitor and review issues of interest to the Board on all bovine food safety concerns.
2. Assure that liaison and cooperation shall exist with the AABP CPBI in order to minimize duplication of efforts.
3. Assure that liaison and cooperation exist with the AVMA through its appropriate divisions, staff, councils, and committees.
4. Assure liaison with other food safety commodity organizations to share common concerns and actions. Examples are the AASV and AAAP.
5. Assure liaisons with appropriate Federal and State entities that affect food safety issues.
6. Formulate and provide recommendations to the Board on food safety issues to which the AABP action or reaction may be in the interest of the Association and/or its membership.

This committee shall:
1) Advise the Board and the Membership of AABP on matters pertaining to information management;
2) Coordinate AABP information management needs with allied organizations;
3) Facilitate the recognition and retrieval of information already available from a wide range of sources;
4) Evaluate options and provide recommendations for disseminating information to the membership of AABP;
5) Be responsible for organizing a meeting of Issues and Interests committee chairpersons at each annual meeting and together with the Executive vice president, prepare an agenda for this meeting.

The LAMENESS COMMITTEE will facilitate the transfer of new information and technology regarding the pathogenesis, treatment and control of bovine lameness to bovine practitioners, animal and dairy scientists, hoof trimmers, the allied industry, and others with an interest in bovine foot and leg health. Specific objectives of this committee include but are not limited to:
(1) To promote improvement of bovine feet and leg health throughout North America.
(2) To solicit and disseminate timely information on bovine lameness to the membership of AABP and others through various media including newsletters, AABP-L, and popular press.
(3) To serve as a liaison for the exchange of information between AABP and other organizations (such as the Hoof Trimmer’s Association, Inc.) with a vested interest in foot and leg health issues.
(4) To address issues of mutual concern between AABP, livestock producers, hoof trimmers, and regulatory authorities (i.e. Extra-Label Drug Use) regarding the care and treatment of lameness conditions.
(5) To encourage development of continuing education programs on lameness for bovine practitioners, hoof trimmers, livestock producers, and others with an interest in bovine foot and leg care.
(6) To keep the membership of AABP and others informed of specific educational opportunities and programs on the topic of foot care (such as the International Symposium on Lameness in Ruminants to be held in Orlando, Florida in January of 2002, in conjunction with the North American Veterinary Conference).
(7) To serve as a resource to the AABP program planning committee and others who may desire suggestions on topics and speakers for educational programs locally, statewide or nationally.
(8) To work cooperatively with the current standing committees of AABP in the transfer of pertinent information regarding lameness and issues such as housing and cow comfort, nutrition and feeding management, animal welfare, etc.
(9) To encourage Colleges of Veterinary Medicine throughout North America to provide students with an appropriate level (or amount) of information in their curricula on the topic of bovine lameness treatment and control
(10) To promote research in bovine lameness by encouraging increased funding for investigations dealing with problems of locomotion in cattle through governmental agencies and private industry

The MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE shall have the following charges/responsibilities:
General Membership
1. Make recommendations to the Board of Directors (BOD) on eligibility requirements, benefits, services offered to, and recruitment of the membership.
2. Field suggestions and concerns from the membership body and summarize them into action steps for the BOD.
3. Develop and distribute AABP membership brochure.
4. Maintain database on membership demographics and specialty breakdown.
a. Address concerns/issues with changing demographics to ensure that we meet the needs of all our members
b. Relay membership concerns to the committee and BOD
Student Membership
1. Effectively communicate with colleges and students with respect to AABP awards, benefits, programs, and other opportunities that benefit students.
2. Foster student and recent graduate involvement in the organization in an effort to groom future leaders.
3. Relay student concerns back to the committee and board.
4. Organize and administer the following programs:
a. Student Externship Program
b. Student Case Presentation
c. Student AABP Programs
d. SCAVMA interactions
e. Prevet Society interactions
f. Education Fund

1. Communicate with international members in an effort to foster relationships and meet the needs and concerns of our international members.

This committee shall apprise the Board and Membership with regard to issues pertaining to bovine udder health, milk quality, milk residue avoidance and food safety of milk products. The committee shall ensure that an appropriate liaison exists with NMC (formerly known as the National Mastitis Council), and the milk quality committees of other specialty organizations, and that recommendations are made to the AABP Program Committee with regard to topics and speakers relating to udder health, milk quality, milk residue avoidance, and milk product food safety for the annual meeting and other continuing education opportunities for AABP members. In addition, the committee shall provide abstracted research reports and/or original articles for printing in the AABP newsletter.

This committee shall apprise the Board and membership with regard to issues pertaining to bovine nutrition in all sectors including feedlot, cow-calf and dairy. The committee will be called upon by the AABP Program Committee to recommend appropriate nutrition topics and speakers for the annual meeting. In addition, it will provide abstracted research reports and/or original articles for printing in the AABP newsletter and seek to influence and promote the incorporation of nutrition into the veterinary curriculum in North American veterinary colleges. Finally, the committee shall ensure the continued AABP representation on the American Feed Industry Association's Nutrition Council and formulate and provide recommendations to the Board.

1) monitor and review those issues of interest and significance to the Board on all animal drug and residue issues;

3) assure that liaison exists with appropriate Federal and/or State agencies, bureaus, and organizations that deal with animal drug and residue issues;
4) provide an identifiable and responsible body with which the pharmaceutical industries, other allied veterinary and professional organizations, and commodity and special interest groups can interact on issues relating to animal drugs and residues;
5) formulate and provide recommendations to the Board on animal drug and residue issues to which AABP action or reaction may be in the best interest of the association.

This committee shall be an educational resource to the Board and membership on all matters relating to reproduction. The committee shall work closely with the Society for Theriogenology, the National Association of Animal Breeders, the National Cattlemen's Association and other similar organizations, and the Dairy Record Processing Centres for the development of standardized nomenclature and performance indices. Finally, the Committee shall provide abstracted research reports and/or original articles for printing in the newsletter and will recommend to the AABP Program Committee appropriate reproduction topics and speakers for the annual meetings.
